Minutes of Meeting:
23
January
We
reviewed the last student’s council meeting.
We
discussed the 6th year tea/coffee evening and
considered making changes to it as it is not as enjoyable as
hoped. Many 6th Years do not bring in their money and
the noise levels are unmanageable.
We
considered possible charity events to be held in the school -
Fancy Dress Day, Pyjama
Day
Anyone with a suitable idea for a fundraising day, enlighten us
and place your idea in the suggestion box
Minutes of Meeting:
16
January
Apologies: Lynne
O’ Neill and Roisin Doyle
It was agreed that
we should hold meetings every Wednesday at lunch time
after the mock exams.
We took a brief
look at the school’s Health and Safety Statement and asked if
there were any queries about the building or rooms.
It was felt that
sex education talks should be given to younger years in the
school than at present.
It was proposed to
give first years more science classes and the possible solution
to make room on the time-table was to drop some choice subjects.
This idea was dismissed as all agreed that 1st Years
should be given a taste of each subject before they choose.
It was suggested
that last class each Friday, 6th Years could hold a
tea/coffee evening during a non-examination class.
The enrolment each
year was discussed and we discovered that many determined
parents stay over night outside the school, pre-enrolment day.
This was considered unjust and it was proposed to select each
name, at random from a raffle box.
The Anti-bullying
policy is to be updated as Bebo, My Space and other internet
bullying sites have become more popular to target students.
We discussed
fundraising ideas to raise money for picnic tables which the
school will be receiving for the spring/summer term.
The suggestion box
was opened and ideas from each year were considered.
Ms. Gahan agreed
that she would rather hold a soccer league in the school rather
than put together a Loreto team as the pitch would not be
available at lunch time.
Minutes of
Meeting: 9 November
Apologies sent from the
following who could not attend the meeting:
Lynne O'Neill Roisin Doyle.
Opening comments:
A letter was received by the
chairperson asking the council if they would like to buy
calendars to sell in Loreto and to raise money to send to
Sudan.
The Parent's Council requested to
arrange a lunch meeting in the school with the members of the
Student's Council.
A problem put forward by the
caretaker, Martin, was discussed. We talked about the situation
of students toasting rolls, chibattas etc. in the sandwich
toaster. Sandwich toasters have been broken because of this
problem and it was suggested that instead of buying a new
sandwich toaster, we could purchase a panini maker instead.
We also clarified that the
treasurer will open the credit union or post office account of
the student's council to lodge our school grant.
Healthy eating week was fixed for
26 November. The parent's council and healthy eating committee
requested suqqestions from students for different types of fruit
to be sold in the foyer during healthy eating week.
Suggestions and concerns were
also discussed:
P.E. and Guidance classes in 5th
and 6th years were discussed.
We opened the suggestion box and
discussed notes from students. Some of their ideas and concerns
included:
· A
soccer team to be put together for Loreto
·
Permission to be given to go down town at lunch time
·
Emptying of bins
We also discussed about the sex
and drugs talks that were given to 3rd and 2nd years last year
and concluded that the talks should also be given to 1st years
as these talks were said to be very effective.
It was also suggested by the
student's council that transition years could have talk
workshops with S.P.H.E. classes and discuss some of the topics
relating to the sex and drugs talk.
Minutes of Meeting : 12 October
At the first official meeting of
the student's council, Mr. O' Shea gave us information about our
year long commitment.
The information contained the
objectives of the student's council, how it is represented and
the constitution. The constitution contained our name, aims,
objectives, structures and finance. Mr O' Shea gave us a brief
explanation and run through of each point on the constitution.
Our next job was to elect members
for the roles of the chairperson, vice chairperson, secretary,
assistant secretary, Treasurer and PRO. The positions of the
chairperson, secretary and treasurer will be held for 2 years.
Chairperson:
Grainne Regan
Secretary: Shauna
Watson
Treasurer:
Anna Mealy
PRO: Lynne
O' Neill
The head girl and deputy head
girl then explained and told us about the Wexford Youth Council
- Comhairle na nOg and asked who was interested in taking part.
Finally we decided on a suitable
day and time to hold our second meeting. We agreed to rotate the
time of each meeting so no member would be consistently absent
from a particular class at that time.
